NOVEMBER 2009

All the work involved with our two new screen-prints for Idlewild’s ‘Post Electric Blues’ UK tour has lead us to getting involved in the design of the merchandise range produced for the tour. We’re really pleased to have been working with the band again after the success of the Tuts and Dingwalls prints we’d designed and printed for the band – and especially after them releasing such a belter of a new album with ‘Post Electric Blues’.

See our recent work page for more details.

We were delighted to have had our submission for ‘Homecoming Live – The Final Fling’ selected after winning a 4 way design pitch earlier this year. Presented by DF Concerts, Homecoming Live will no doubt prove to be a fantastic end to this year’s ongoing Homecoming celebrations – showcasing some of the very best music from Scottish artists and bands, past, present & future.

Line-up and full details to be announced soon.

Some site updates fitted in at last …and once we work out where July went, we’ll continue to revisit the site – with a re-design in the pipeline sometime soon (time-permitting, of course!)

The ongoing chronic hosting problems experienced over the last few months are now thankfully a thing of the past. Apologies for any alarm caused by the Malware warning messages when visiting our site.

Despite a huge amount of time being spent trying to rectify the situation, it took a change of hosting company to finally solve the problems we’ve experienced with our site.

We’ll now be updating the site over the next few weeks with everything we’ve been up to since March… where do we start?

MARCH 2009

Our Frightened Rabbit screenprint for the bands two gigs at The Captain’s Rest, Glasgow will be available at both the gigs on 31st March – see the Handcooked  website for more details. We’ve still to decide how many prints will be made available in the edition, but it’s one of our favourite prints already – with the two main colour runs complemented by a three colour blend run at the foot of the poster, which we’ve varied throughout the run just to add an extra uniqueness to each print.

Since pitching for – and winning – the design work involved as part of the ongoing refurbishment of  The Stirling Arcade, Baseline have been involved in developing and implementing an effective branding for this historic arcade since November last year – culminating so far with the recent launch of the The Stirling Arcade’s new website.

We’re also delighted to be able to announce that we’re now working with our ongoing studio i-pod fixation… Frightened Rabbit. Baseline will be both designing and printing limited edition printed for their sold out acoustic show at The Captain’s Rest in Glasgow at the end of March.

After releasing a truly remarkable album last year with “The Midnight Organ Fight”, we’re really looking forward to this project – with our resulting design work posted here over the next week or two.

FEBRUARY 2009

As seems to happen too often with Baseline, we’ve managed to lose a few months just there – jumping from being seriously covered in ink with our Idlewild prints through to somehow landing up in the middle of February… all along with us somehow managing to mis-place one of our designers as well… oh well.

Anyway, 2009 does now find us in rude health… and a leaner, fitter Baseline should be riding out the current financial uncertainty with a number of exciting projects in the pipeline – which we will be shouting about very soon.

Along with our ongoing work for DF Concerts (and a busy year involved with them promoting TITP, Take That, The Eagles, AC/DC & Coldplay – alongside the huge amount of gigs they do otherwise) and our current SxSW work for the Scottish Arts Council, a lot of the groundwork done with Handcooked Posters should be reaping the benefits with the prospect of workshops, exhibitions & tour editions all looking very likely in the near future.

NOVEMBER 2008

We are really pleased to finally announce that our poster offshoot – Handcooked Posters – has been working on a series of five individually designed posters for Idlewild’s residency at King Tuts near the end of December. With 50 of each 9″ x 24″ numbered poster initially on sale at the gigs only, these prints are a near perfect way of introducing the art of screen printing gig posters to a wider audience in Scotland. All five posters can be viewed at the Handcooked website.

OCTOBER 2008

Our screen printing off-shoot from Baseline - Handcooked Posters is now fully up and running since the kit was pu in place back in April (…it’s been a long Summer spent learning the process and producing test/sample prints to let people see what we can achieve through this medium).

Handcooked specialises in the design and printing of limited edition, screen printed gig posters and features the work of the designers at Baseline, and also collaborative work with other designers who share our passion for screen printed gig posters.

We’re currently working on the initial designs for a series of posters to be produced for some very special gigs taking place in December. Once we’ve got the design stage more finalised, we’ll announce and show what we’ve been busy with, but it’s an exciting project to be working on –  a truly wonderful band AND a pretty cool venue. So should be a good one to formally launch what we can offer with our printing set up.

The website for Handcooked is also now fully up and running, so if you’re interested in finding out a bit more on the whole screen printing process, take a look at www.handcookedposters.com

SEPTEMBER 2008

At the time of writing (2nd Sept), our Summer intern should be somewhere over the Atlantic, on her way back home to Tennessee to resume her studies at the University of Tennesee, Knoxville.

Along with all the studio experience gained at baseline, she’ll be taking home an armful of screen-prints after all the time spent helping set up our screen-print workshop …and a raft of Scottish terms & phrases that’ll only get her into trouble!! ‘bye Staci!

Connect Hand Painted Signage

As part of our work for this year’s Connect Festival, Douglas and Staci spent a day (plus half a night) rolling out the paint pots on site at Inveraray, to transform some very wet bits of tree into funky site signage. All in, over 25 signs were done to keep punters going in the right direction and the colourful end result, based on the onsite literature we did looked fun and mirrored the vibe of the event itself.

MAY 2008

Admittedly, it has all been rather quiet on the news front with baseline, but that’s only been an indication that there’s been way too much on the go… (as usual!)

Our seventh birthday back in March came and went in a blur of activity, then Pathways to Work launched at the end of April after a huge amount of design effort from us all, the second Connect festival launched, the new Scottish Woodlands website has been developed, and all the while our new screen printing set-up has taken a huge amount of time and effort to put in place and then get up and running…

letterpress design

And all the while, there’s been many transatlantic and time-difference related arrangements put in place to welcome Staci Rowlison to baseline for what promises to be a busy summer for us all. Staci’s currently studying graphic design at the University of Tennessee, and after discovering us on the American Poster Institute’s website (and then wondering why a small company in Scotland was there in the first place!), she approached us regarding an internship with us for the Summer.

After a look through her portfolio and us letting her know more about our formative screen printing workshop, we all said yes – and we have Staci with us through to the end of August. She brings along a good knowledge – and a love – of the screen printing process, a unique working experience with renowned Knoxville, Tennessee-based letterpress printers Yee Haw Industries – all along with an enthusiastic attitude to all things design-related and a distinctively US-based visual approach to graphic design.

Some of the Yee Haw Industries posters Staci’s been involved with printing…

Many thanks to both Kevin from Yee Haw & Staci for sending/bringing so many wonderful posters over for us – that’s yet more studio wall-space to be filled with artwork from the US!
